The Tennessee High School Speech and Drama League is
a professional association for speech and theatre educators
throughout Tennessee. At a time when many of our programs
are threatened because of budget cuts, THSSDL membership
can provide a collective voice in favor of maintaining and
improving programs already in existence and in helping to
establish new programs.

THSSDL provides training for teachers at its fall conference
held every September. Member schools from across the state
compete in public speaking and acting activities. THSSDL schools
compete in high school invitationals throughout most of the year.
Between February and mid-April, each district hosts its State
Qualifier Tournament. Students have opportunities to compete in
activities ranging from extemporaneous speaking to solo acting.
Group events include one-act play competition and interpreters'
theatre. Students can also compete in Public Forum Debate, Lincoln-Douglas Debate, and Cross Examination Debate (if entries warrant).
The top four students in individual contests earn the right to represent
their schools and their districts at the State Tournament in April. The
top two interpreters' theatre groups continue on to state.
